Botanic Garden

Botanic garden is a place where different species of plants grow and are displayed mainly for educational and scientific purposes. Chiefly, they comprise of livings plants collection, grown under glass inside the conservatories or greenhouses or out-of-doors. Usually, it includes a collection of herbarium or dried plants, and other facilities like laboratories, lecture rooms, museums, libraries, research or experimental plantings.

Different types of plants: The plants present in the botanic garden might be arranged depending on one or more sub-divisions of botanic science. Also, the arrangement could be systematic (plant classification), geographic (region of origin) or ecological (relation to environment).larger gardens tend to include some unique groupings like water gardens, wildflower gardens, rock gardens, and various horticultural group collections that are produced through plant breeding, like tulips, roses, rhododendrons. Most botanical gardens incorporate water features.

Botanic garden history: The earliest type of botanic garden that was created to study plants was set up in ancient Athens by Aristotle around 340 B.C. The oldest garden that was meant for the public was established in 1543, at Pisa, Italy, then in 1545 at Padua, Italy, in 1635 at Paris, in 1679 in Berlin. Herbalists during the 16th and 17th centuries cultivated different types of medicinal herbs in the private gardens. Society of Apothecaries, in 1673 is known to have planted in London, the Chelsea Physic Garden for providing materials to medicine and research. John Bartram, the modern American botanist, in 1728, set up the first experimental botanic garden near Philadelphia, U.S.

Locations of a botanic garden in the world: Almost every major city in the world boasts of having a botanical garden. Kew Gardens or better known as The Royal Botanic Gardens, near London, was set up in 1759. It is said to be the largest of all the botanical gardens that exist in the world. Research and experiments are carried out here, which has led to transplanting the commercially productive crops, like rubber, from the native habitats to the different parts of the world.

Advantages of visiting the botanic garden: There are various benefits to be derived from visiting a botanical garden. City dwellers by visiting one, can understand the varieties of plants that exist in the world and also escape from the hustle and bustle of life to enjoy clean and pure surroundings. This way, they can also develop new hobbies and interests and try to recreate one in their backyard or garden. In such exceptional parks, from across the globe, plants of different types are cultivated scientifically, studied and then displayed artistically for enlightening the public and for their pleasure. Unlike general parks, the botanical gardens are more than just a landscape beauty. Often, there are present unique, small gardens, like the rock gardens, rose gardens, Japanese landscape, wildflower gardens, etc. within the botanical gardens. Most have segments that are devoted to specific geographic origin plants, of the tropical plant category, or the aquatic plant category. The plants are labeled depending on their scientific name, the region of origin and common name.
